Multi-age Cohorts

Multi-age Cohorts at The Kineo School

Multi-age classrooms provide numerous benefits to learners. Students can learn at their own pace, enjoy an environment that is suited to their individual needs, and develop confidence as they learn. At The Kineo School, our students are currently divided into two multi-age cohorts, K-2 and 3rd-5th. While students remain in their cohorts during Core Academics, all students together for recess, lunch, and free play. Additional opportunities for cohorts to partner include community service tasks, field trips, and specific projects.

K-2 Cohort
Our K-2 Cohort is comprised of 10 students and 2 teachers. Our younger learners begin their educational journey in a bright room with access to plenty of books, games, art materials, manipulatives, and sensory tools. We take a play-based approach as we engage students in their learning, often using their interests in various subjects such as math or literacy. It is here that the building blocks of Core Academics, classroom readiness, and social-emotional learning begin.

3rd-5th Cohort
The 3rd-5th Cohort consists of 15 students and 2 teachers. Our older students continue to develop and enhance the skills they learned in K-2 through hands-on projects, group work, and other activities. They are more independent and greater choice is given to projects to reflect their interests. They learn about leadership as they interact and model expectations for our younger learners.

As we continue to grow, cohorts will further separate into K/1, 2/3, and 4/5.
